First off, I have Dolly-fied my blog wallpaper in her honor! 😂
Secondly, have you noticed the outpouring of love from the black community for Dolly Parton equal to that of white people?
I mean, what other Southern white country singer would be equally mourned by people of color, right?
I noticed it and was thinking about that the other day, and you should too - what did she do right that other white folks aren't?
Then this video popped up in my feed, which breaks down why for you. Some of it I knew, some of it I didn't.
Most people know by now that although she refused Elvis recording her song "I Will Always Love You," she did allow Whitney Houston to record it.
But did you also know she used the royalties on it to support an impoverished black community in Tennessee?
And, fellow Christians - pay very close attention to what she says around the 5-minute mark about her support of Black Lives Matter and the right to protest.
She says she prays about it and just goes with her heart and what she believes God would want, and doesn't care what anybody else thinks about it.
This is when she said "Do we think our little white asses are the only things that matter?" that I mentioned earlier.
Also, Dolly knows struggle - she never forgot where she came from and she understands better than anybody the way this messed-up socioeconomic American system works from both sides, poor and rich - and did what she could to compensate for it.
Somehow, Dolly could get away with it despite being a country music legend.
And do you know how she did it?
Because she never criticized actual politicians themselves, just supported causes she believed in - because she felt action meant more than empty words, and because she wanted to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem.
The closest she ever came to criticism was in the 2016 election, when asked about Trump VS. Hillary - "I think they're both nuts." 😂
